Al2O3-modified 7YSZ thermal barrier coatings for protection against volcanic ash corrosion

Abstract To prevent volcanic ash corrosion using thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), a novel method Al 2 O 3 -modification was proposed to reduce molten CMAS wettability on TBCs surface through lotus effect. Plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD), third-generation for fabrication, adopted deposit 7YSZ with feather-like microstructure. Then, modification introduced fabricate dense overlay nano/micro-sized grains the surface. The wetting ability of APS/EB-PVD/PS-PVD comparatively in situ observed at 1250 °C 3600 s. results indicated that inhibited penetration CMAS. Additionally, micro/nano dual-sized structure, which is similar papillary structure leaf, reduced demonstrated -modified had better resistance than as-deposited TBCs.
